Arithmetic Progression Hypergraphs: Examining the Second Moment Method

چکیده
In many data structure settings, it has been shown that using “double hashing” in place of standard hashing, by which we mean choosing multiple hash values according to an arithmetic progression instead of choosing each hash value independently, has asymptotically negligible difference in performance. We attempt to extend these ideas beyond data structure settings by considering how threshold arguments based on second moment methods can be generalized to “arithmetic progression” versions of problems. With this motivation, we define a novel “quasi-random” hypergraph model, random arithmetic progression (AP) hypergraphs, which is based on edges that form arithmetic progressions and unifies many previous problems. Our main result is to show that second moment arguments for 3-NAE-SAT and 2coloring of 3-regular hypergraphs extend to the double hashing setting. We leave several open problems related to these quasi-random hypergraphs and the thresholds of associated problem variations. ∗Harvard University, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. On the Second Moment for Primes in an Arithmetic Progression
Abstract. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we obtain a lower bound within a constant factor of the conjectured asymptotic result for the second moment for primes in an individual arithmetic progression in short intervals. Previous results were averaged over all progression of a given modulus. The method uses a short divisor sum approximation for the von Mangoldt function, together w...
متن کاملImproved algorithms for colorings of simple hypergraphs and applications
The paper deals with extremal problems concerning colorings of hypergraphs. By using a random recoloring algorithm we show that any nuniform simple (i.e. every two distinct edges share at most one vertex) hypergraph H with maximum edge degree at most ∆(H) 6 c · nr, is r-colorable, where c > 0 is an absolute constant. As an application of our proof technique we establish a new lower bound for Va...
متن کاملOn rainbow 4-term arithmetic progressions
{sl Let $[n]={1,dots, n}$ be colored in $k$ colors. A rainbow AP$(k)$ in $[n]$ is a $k$ term arithmetic progression whose elements have different colors. Conlon, Jungi'{c} and Radoiv{c}i'{c} cite{conlon} prove that there exists an equinumerous 4-coloring of $[4n]$ which is rainbow AP(4) free, when $n$ is even. Based on their construction, we show that such a coloring of $[4n]$...
متن کاملRegular partitions of hypergraphs and property testing
About 30 years ago Szemerédi developed the regularity method for graphs, which was a key ingredient in the proof of his famous density result concerning the upper density of subsets of the integers which contain no arithmetic progression of fixed length. Roughly speaking, the regularity lemma asserts, that the vertex set of every graph can be partitioned into a constant number of classes such t...
متن کاملArithmetization of distributions and linear goal programming
Linear goal programming can be used as a complementary technique when local moment matching method up to the second moment gives some negative mass. This could happen when manipulating a discrete or mixed type severity distribution. In that case we can avoid a simple retreat to the first moment and look for an arithmetic distribution with equal mean and the second moment closest to that of the ...
